Priority Energy is a certified BPI Training and Testing Center and offers the following BPI building science certification training, certification renewal and continuing education classes.
You and your employees may be eligible for FREE BPI Training!
New and existing companies can apply for grant funding to train and certify themselves and their employees. The Incumbent Worker Training (IWT) Grant and the COVID-19 Recovery Aid could provide as much as $25,000 to train your staff. The grants were developed to help both the employer and the employee avoid layoff, gain skills, attain certifications or renew a professional designation that will ultimately help to grow and develop the business. Employers should apply through their county offices in Cook County, DuPage County and Lake County.
Approval for Grant Funding is easy and fast!
An insulation company in DuPage County received grant funding (March 2022) to train himself and one of his employees in as little as 2 weeks. Most home builders, HVAC contractors and trades companies will qualify to up-skill their staff. Employers must have an interview with their county IWT coordinator and complete an application. Priority Energy has spoken with the program coordinators for Cook, DuPage and Lake County and can help connect you with the appropriate resource.*
The following websites will provide more information:
IWT for Cook County Business Owners
IWT for DuPage County Business Owners
IWT for Lake County Business Owners
* Priority Energy is not affiliated with IWT and cannot answer questions on eligibility or make any decision on employer approval.
Building Science Principles (BSP) Training
Building Science is the study of all the elements that impact a building's performance, including design, materials, HVAC equipment, construction, and climate zone. Our building science training explains these components and how they affect the energy efficiency, comfort, indoor air quality and durability of homes and buildings. The concepts are explained and demonstrated in our on-site, indoor training house.
Priority Energy's Building Science Professional (BSP) training is a two-day program to prepare students to master BPI's Building Science Professional exam. Students have the option to take the BSP exam and earn the BPI's Certificate of Knowledge.
Beginning in June 2023, the Building Science Professional certification will be a prerequisite for the new Building Analyst Technician (BA-T) and Building Analyst Professional (BA-P). The old Building Analyst and Envelop Professional certifications will be combined into these two progressive designations.
BPI Infiltration and Duct Leakage Certification (IDL)
Builders, remodelers, HVAC, insulation, and other contractors can use this training to better understand the IECC code compliance testing process or use their new skills/certification to offer duct leakage and blower door tests for new home construction or existing home remodels.
This 5-hour Infiltration and Duct Leakage (IDL) training will prepare students to measure whole-house infiltration, total distribution system leakage and total leakage-to-the-outside, to test a home for BPI and IECC compliance. Training will be a combination of classroom lecture and hands-on equipment use in our BPI-approved test house.
Candidates have up to 1.5 hours to complete their field exam in the test house where they must demonstrate their knowledge with a score of 85% or better to earn this BPI certification. Exams will be scheduled during the training session, usually within one week of training.
This is NOT a whole house building science based certification. Course offers 1.25 CEUs.
IDL CertificationTraining and Exam: $975.
BPI Air Leakage Control Installer Certification (formerly RBEWHALCI)
Students will learn how to tighten the building envelope in existing residential homes in order to reduce energy loss and improve indoor air quality by sealing air leaks. Comfort and energy efficiency improvements will be attained by proper installation of dense-pack insulation.
Priority Energy’s two-day session includes one day of classroom instruction and one day of lab training. Instructors will lead candidates through proper sealing techniques at each of BPI’s seven required structural props.
The RBE certification exam is a hands-on demonstration of a student’s weatherization knowledge and air sealing ability at each of the seven props. Students must be able to explain why and how they approach each task. Exam can take up to 7 hours.
ALCI Training and Certification Exam: $3450.
BPI Building Analyst Certification (BA)
Priority Energy’s BA training is usually held over 5 consecutive days (customized sessions are available). This interactive training will take students through all the categories they need to know to successfully pass BPI’s Building Analyst Exams, including:
- Building Science Fundamentals
- BPI’s Health and Safety Guidelines
- Airflow & Ventilation Assessments per ASHRAE 62.2
- Blower Door testing
- Building Evaluations for Heat Loss and Savings Calculations
- BPI’s Building Safety Standards-Combustion and CO measurements
- Duct Leak Evaluation
- BPI’s Work Scope Development Process
Students will learn to use the latest diagnostic equipment and can take advantage of "practice time" in our training lab.
Our training concludes on the fifth day when the written exams are administered. A passing score is 70%. Once the written exam has been mastered, the Building Analyst Field exam will be scheduled.
BA Training and Certification (1) Exam: $2750.
BA plus IDL Training and Certification (2) Exams: $3450.
BA plus Envelope Training and Certification (2) Exams - $3750.
BPI Envelope Professional Certification (BE)
The Building Envelope focuses specifically on the exterior shell of a building and its ability to adequately protect its inhabitants. An important component to the energy efficient, house-as-a-system equation, Priority Energy recommends that students train and test for both the BA and Envelope certifications during the same session. In this way, the BA and Envelope Field exams can be conducted at the same time. A passing score is 70%. Once the written exam has been mastered, the Field exam will be scheduled. This is highly recommended as an Add-On certification. This is our most popular Energy Auditor certification.
BA plus ENV Training and Certification (2) Exams $3750!
(Required for Illinois contractors in the utility rebate programs.)
BPI’s Advanced Home Energy Professionals (HEP) Certifications
Required by some state and utility-run programs, a BPI advanced certification will distinguish the industry’s highly skilled and experienced home energy professionals. The HEP certifications are recognized nationwide and supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
BPI’s Home Energy Professional (HEP) certifications require candidates to demonstrate their advanced competency through experience prerequisites, and more challenging written and field exams.
Priority Energy can help you attain or renew any of the following HEP certifications:
- Energy Auditor (EA)
- Quality Control Inspector (QCI)
- Healthy Home Evaluator (HHE)
- Retrofit Installer (RI)
- Crew Leader (CL)
Please call our training coordinator for more information and prices.
Earn both the BPI and RESNET Certifications during the same week!
We know it's hard to get time away from your business. Priority Energy's combined training curriculum will prepare you for both the BPI and RESNET certifications. Allow one full week of instruction in our office and a few additional days for field work and exams. This intensive training is recommended for experienced professionals only.
